Mexico spotlighted
By Jeff Hornberger, CIPS, RCE, Director,
Global Alliances NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®
In an effort to
address countries and markets that offer the most business to NAR and its
members, Mexico has been chosen as the 2013 “country spotlight”, a new program
designed to allocate cross-divisional programs, time and effort for a yearlong
sustained effort designed to deliver more programming to NAR-Global and address
member business opportunities as it relates to cross border business. After an
informal program in Brazil in 2011, a yearlong effort will commence in Mexico.
High points of this program are as follows:
Member business. Mexico is
consistently the #2 or #3 top investor in US real estate over a 10-year period;
on the outbound investment side, Mexico is the #1 destination for Americans and
baby-boomers who retire abroad, with an estimated 1 million + Americans residing
there, up to half of who may own real estate; anecdotally, Mexican practitioners
report increasing sales to Americans, thanks to an improving economy and
security situation there.
International membership. The Mexico
association partner, AMPI, has committed its 1,500 broker owners to joining NAR
as international REALTOR members, providing income to develop programming; the
REALTOR® brand enjoys a high level of prestige in Mexico as a result if its
inclusion in NAFTA, as well as its reputation of professionalism due to the high
number of US and Canada buyers and referring agents there.
Educating
NAR members on Mexico opportunities. NAR-Global will develop specialized
communications on Mexico opportunities, educating members about the breadth and
depth of both inbound and outbound transaction opportunities that it
provides.
In-country events. The Mexico partner group, AMPI, is
working to organize special activities targeted to NAR members in 2013
including: CIPS institutes, a special international conference in Los Cabos on
June 8 & 9, and a cruise organized by the Texas Association which will offer
property tours in the Cancun area. The Mexico group is also exploring
organizing a pavilion on the NAR trade show floor in San Francisco.
Local
Council growth. NAR will assist AMPI in making connections to international
local councils across the United States; efforts in 2012 produced several dozen
alliances with local associations in Texas – in 2013, AMPI will seek alliances
for local REALTOR® groups in other regions, especially in California where they
seek to develop ties there.
